Now that I have a better understanding of what’s required for Media Studies this year, I can reflect on my current skills, what I still need to learn, and what I’m excited to explore.
What I Know
So far, I already have some skills that will help me in this course. I have experience with basic video editing, using apps like CapCut and iMovie to put together short videos. While I’m not an expert, I understand the basics of cutting clips, adding transitions, and adjusting audio.
I also have a strong sense of creative direction :I love aesthetics and visual storytelling, especially when it comes to makeup, beauty, and horror. I know how to create eye-catching visuals, whether through colors, outfits, or set design.
Another skill is my understanding of social media. Since I spend a lot of time on TikTok and YouTube, I know what makes content engaging and how different types of media appeal to different audiences. This knowledge can help when thinking about how to make my film opening stand out.
Lastly, I have basic filming skills :I know how to shoot videos on a smartphone, frame shots well, and use natural lighting to my advantage. However, I recognize that there’s still a lot to improve when it comes to professional filmmaking techniques.
What I Need to Know
While I have some skills, there are still many things I need to learn in order to succeed. One of the biggest areas for improvement is advanced video editing. I want to move beyond basic editing apps and learn how to use professional software like Adobe Premiere Pro or Final Cut Pro to create a more cinematic feel.
Another key skill I need to develop is sound design. Since horror films rely heavily on sound to build suspense, I need to learn how to create and layer eerie sound effects, background music, and dialogue to enhance the atmosphere of my film opening.
I also need to improve my camera techniques. Right now, I mostly film using my phone, but I want to learn how to use a DSLR camera to capture higher-quality footage. Along with that, I need to understand lighting for horror: how to use shadows, low-key lighting, and special effects to create tension.
Lastly, if my horror film involves any creepy effects, I might need to explore special effects makeup. Learning how to create realistic wounds, ghostly faces, or other horror elements could add an extra level of professionalism to my project.
What I Want to Know
Beyond what I need to learn, there are also some techniques and media related skills I’m simply curious to experiment with. One of them is green screen effects.I think it would be really cool to learn how to add unique backgrounds or eerie visual effects to my film.
Another skill I’d love to develop is Photoshop and graphic design. Being able to create promotional materials like movie posters or title sequences would help my project feel more complete.
Finally, I’m curious about AI and editing tools : new technology is making editing easier and faster, so I’d love to experiment with any AI tools that could enhance my workflow.
